F.D. ROOSEVELT STATE PARK

http://www.gastateparks.org

F.D. Roosevelt State Park is part of the Georgia Park System.  Located just three miles from Callaway Gardens and twelve miles from FDR’s Little White House, Roosevelt State Park provides a good location for anyone interested in those attractions.

The park has 140 wooded sites with a great variance in quality.  There are many level sites on paved roads, but there are also sites on a dusty, bumpy road and they are far from level.  You can make reservations at www.gastateparks.org, but making a reservation only means you will get a site.  Depending on your size requirements, upon arrival you will be given a red, white or yellow card and told to find an empty space with a color coded post that matches your card.

So if you want one of those level sites on a paved road plan on arriving early.  Once there you can walk one of five nature trails; from Memorial Day through Labor Day you can walk (or drive via the road) a 1.8 mile trail to the swimming pool and you can bring your horse to board overnight and go for a ride.  There are also guided rides on 20 miles of wooded trails.

A few of the camping sites are next to Lake Delanor, and most are in easy walking distance from the lake.  There are also several paved sites reserved for handicapped individuals that are conveniently located next to the restrooms and showers.  Speaking of showers, one member of our party was unable to get hot water at the closest facility and was forced to walk some distance to another.

The price of a camping site is $28, but there is an additional $3 charge for parking that is collected at check in.  This is the first time I recall having to pay to camp at a state park and then having to pay to park.  We do not have a Toad, so it seems a bit like double dipping to me.  To sum up, F. D. Roosevelt State Park is pleasant and may well be the favorite Georgia State Park of many, but it rates a “probably will not return” on the Kean Meter.
